The Making of a Gay Icon: A Conversation with Mario Cantone

Unilever.edu.vn recently had the pleasure of catching up with the hilarious Mario Cantone in the heart of Times Square. Known for his scene-stealing role as Charlotte’s wedding planner on “Sex and the City,” Cantone himself is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. We couldn’t resist picking his brain about a topic close to the community’s heart: gay icons.

Who better to ask than someone who’s shared the screen with the fabulous Sarah Jessica Parker? So, we dove right in: “Mario, who do you think is the biggest gay icon of all time?”

Without missing a beat, Cantone answered, “Well, historically, it’s Judy Garland.” He went on to explain that while many living icons like Cher continue to inspire, there’s a generational gap when it comes to the legends of Hollywood’s golden age. “Talk to a young homosexual today,” he quipped, “and they might not even know who Judy Garland is!”

This sparked a fascinating discussion about the very essence of what makes a gay icon. Cantone pointed out that it’s almost always a woman. “Gay men love women,” he explained, “so it makes sense that the figures we look up to often embody a powerful, glamorous, and often trailblazing feminine energy.”

This had us wondering, are there any prominent male gay icons? Names like Ricky Martin, Liberace, and even Harvey Milk were thrown into the mix. Each, in their own right, has broken down barriers and become symbols of hope and progress.

What do you think? Who are some of your favorite gay icons, and what is it about them that resonates with you? Let us know in the comments below!
