Tom Holland, renowned for his portrayal of Spider-Man, recently celebrated three years of sobriety. This significant milestone marks a turning point in the actor’s life, prompting him to share his journey and the reasons behind his decision to quit alcohol.
In a candid interview with Men’s Health for their January/February issue, Holland, 27, revealed his struggle with moderation. “My problem was that I would have one drink and be fine, and then I would just go too far,” he confessed. A pivotal piece of advice from his lawyer resonated deeply with him: “You’ll never wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink.” This simple yet profound statement helped Holland navigate his journey toward sobriety.

Holland’s journey began with Dry January in 2022, initially intending to abstain for just a month. However, he realized alcohol had become ingrained in his routine, impacting his life in ways he hadn’t fully recognized. “Every Friday after work was a write-off: Let’s get drunk and have a good time,” he admitted. While he didn’t have negative experiences, he often drank enough to ruin the following day. A turning point came when he asked his younger brother to drive him home from a party because he felt the need to drink to enjoy himself. This prompted those close to him to express concern, questioning his reliance on alcohol.
Holland’s commitment to sobriety faced challenges, particularly during the filming of the Apple TV+ series “The Crowded Room” in May 2022. The on-set environment was tense, filled with disagreements and conflicts. He realized that resuming drinking amidst this stressful situation would only exacerbate matters. “I thought, ‘If I start drinking again now, with all this going on, it’s gonna get worse, right?'”

Despite not seeking professional rehab, Holland leaned heavily on his support system: family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers who had also achieved sobriety. He credits his strong will as a crucial factor in his success. “When I decide to do something, I’m really gonna do it,” he affirmed. This determination is evident in his launch of Bero, a line of non-alcoholic beers.
