UK Pizzeria Charges £100 for Pineapple Pizza: A Bold Stance Against a Controversial Topping

Lupa Pizza, a restaurant in Norfolk, England, has taken a decisive stand in the ongoing pineapple-on-pizza debate. By charging a staggering £100 ($122) for their Hawaiian pizza, they hope to discourage customers from ordering the controversial dish and encourage more palatable choices.

Francis Woolf, owner and self-proclaimed “chief fruit consultant,” explained to PEOPLE magazine that the restaurant firmly believes pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza. While acknowledging the dish’s popularity among some, Woolf stated that those who “desperately need” pineapple on their pizza should be prepared to pay a premium.

Lupa Pizza, which opened in June, offers its other pizzas at significantly lower prices, ranging from $12 to $20, according to The Times. This stark price difference further emphasizes their stance against the Hawaiian pizza. The £100 Hawaiian is even listed on the food delivery app Deliveroo, complete with a cheeky description encouraging customers to “order the champagne too!” and embrace their “monster” status. Woolf confirmed the dish was added to the menu after receiving several requests.

The significant price hike appears to be effective. Woolf shared that no one has yet paid the £100 for the pineapple-topped pizza. He reiterated that Lupa Pizza believes “pineapple is not a viable pizza topping” and their pricing reflects this conviction. He emphasized that tropical fruits have no place on pizzas.

Despite their strong feelings about pineapple as a pizza topping, Woolf clarified that the restaurant and its staff enjoy pineapple in other forms. He humorously added that the Pina Colada is a favorite drink among the employees. This highlights the specific objection to pineapple on pizza rather than a general dislike of the fruit. The restaurant’s bold move has certainly sparked conversation and solidified its position in the long-standing pineapple-on-pizza debate.
