Drake Vliem, a Midland, Texas native, recently shared his incredible journey on the “Best of Midland Texas” podcast after winning $500,000 on Netflix’s survival show, Outlast. Vliem detailed his experience, from the initial application process to the grueling challenges of the Alaskan wilderness, highlighting the importance of teamwork, integrity, and his oil field background in securing the victory.
Inspired by Season 1, Prepared for Season 2
Vliem’s adventure began after watching the first season of Outlast. Confident in his survival skills, developed through years of backpacking and outdoor activities, he applied for Season 2. He believed his existing skills gave him an advantage over other potential contestants. After a rigorous selection process involving interviews and survival demonstrations, Vliem earned a spot on the show.
The “Everything Diet” and Alaskan Weight Loss
To prepare for the harsh conditions of the Alaskan wilderness, Vliem employed an “everything diet,” intentionally gaining weight to offset the anticipated rapid weight loss during the competition. He entered the competition weighing 298 pounds and lost 52 pounds in just 32 days. The extreme environment forced contestants to rely on limited resources, with a diet consisting of seaweed, crabs, squirrels, and even slugs.
Integrity Over Sabotage: A Key to Success
A pivotal moment in the podcast involved the discussion of a sabotage attempt by another contestant. Early in the season, contestant Bayo stole water cans from Vliem’s camp, creating immediate tension. Vliem and his teammate prioritized protecting their resources and maintaining their integrity, choosing not to engage in similar tactics. This focus on fairness resonated with viewers.
The Emotional Relief of the Final Days
Vliem described the emotional impact of the competition’s final days. After enduring over a month in isolation, a helicopter delivered news that the competition would conclude in 48 hours. The overwhelming relief of knowing he would soon reunite with his wife and children brought him to tears.
Permian Basin Roots: A Foundation for Resilience
Vliem attributed his resilience to his experience working in the Permian Basin oil fields. The demanding work schedule and physical labor instilled in him the mental and physical stamina required to endure exhaustion and persevere when others faltered. This background proved invaluable in overcoming the challenges of Outlast.
Future Aspirations: More Television and an All-Star Cast
Looking ahead, Vliem expressed his desire to continue his television career, potentially returning for an all-star season of Outlast. He emphasized the profound personal growth he experienced and the invaluable bond formed with his teammate, Drew Haas. He considers Haas a lifelong friend and credits him as essential to his success. Vliem wouldn’t mind another shot at the prize either.
Midland Pride: Celebrating a Local Champion
Vliem’s victory on Outlast is a source of pride for his family and the entire Midland community. It showcases his perseverance, strong work ethic, and passion for the outdoors. His story exemplifies the values and resilience often associated with the region.
