A Michigan woman, Katy Golden, experienced a medical anomaly when her tonsils regrew four decades after being removed in childhood. Golden, a Detroit resident, underwent a tonsillectomy at the age of five in 1983 due to recurring inner ear infections. The procedure initially seemed successful, alleviating her symptoms for over 40 years.
Decades Later, Sore Throats Return
However, in 2024, Golden began experiencing persistent sore throats, prompting her to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. She had noticed a small flap of tissue in the back of her throat for years but dismissed it, assuming it was a normal part of her mouth’s anatomy. While she acknowledged that the area became inflamed during illnesses, she never suspected it could be her tonsils, believing them to have been completely removed.

The Shocking Diagnosis: Regrown Tonsils
In September 2024, Dr. Cynthia Hayes, an ENT in Detroit, examined Golden and delivered the surprising diagnosis: her tonsils had grown back. The left tonsil had almost entirely regenerated, while the right tonsil showed significant regrowth. Golden was stunned, initially questioning the diagnosis and recalling the experience as “hitting her like a ton of bricks.” She found it difficult to believe that tonsils, removed so long ago, could reappear and be the source of her discomfort.
A Rare Medical Phenomenon
Tonsil regrowth, while uncommon, can occur if tonsil tissue remains after a tonsillectomy. Even small amounts of residual tissue can regenerate over time. The likelihood of regrowth is higher if the tonsillectomy is performed before the tonsils have fully developed, typically around age eight. Golden’s tonsillectomy at age five likely contributed to the regrowth.

Second Tonsillectomy and Recovery
Dr. Hayes, who has encountered only one other case of tonsil regrowth in her eight years of practice, confirmed the diagnosis upon examining Golden’s throat. The bumpy texture of the tissue in the area where the tonsils should have been smooth clearly indicated regrowth. Dr. Hayes estimated the regrowth had been present for at least a decade. Subsequently, Golden underwent a second tonsillectomy to remove the regrown tonsils.
Although recovering as an adult has presented greater challenges, Golden is optimistic that this procedure will permanently resolve her chronic sore throats. She anticipates a future free from the discomfort that prompted her to seek medical attention in the first place.
